Dans le café de la jeunesse perdue is a splendid presentation of Guy Debord's philosophy. Although all of the character failed to leave an impression on me, I can't help but think that was Modiano's intention: the Bohemians, their existences were destined to be forgotten. They ran, ran, and ran, and dissapeared in the middle of the new Paris, the city they once knew so well.
What I admire most about this book is, Modiano has such an elegant and tasteful writing style, yet he still manages to haunt people with it.
Particularly, the one thing I dislike in this version is the translation about "taking the subway".

Reality doesn't impress me. I only believe in intoxication, in ecstasy, and when ordinary life shackles me, I escape, one way or another. No more walls. - Anaïs Nin, Incest: From a Journal of Love
